Thai rice futures dropped again on Wednesday as investors sold the January contract short, expecting to cover their positions when prices recovered, brokers said.

Overall volume rose as 93 contracts of 5 percent white rice were traded compared to Tuesday's 51. The most active January contact settled at 11.12 baht per kg, down from 11.22 baht, with the number of contracts traded rising to 47 from 8.

Futures prices were expected to drop further over the next few weeks, tracking physical prices due to the absence of export demand, brokers said.

On the physical front, Thai 5 percent white rice was steady at 10.80 baht per kg.
